Food for thought

"The beef industry has contributed to more American deaths than all the wars of this century, all natural disasters, and all automobile accidents combined. If beef is your idea of 'real food for real people,' you'd better live real close to a real good hospital." --Neal Barnard MD, quoted in the South Florida Sun Sentinel March 18th, 2007

Seafood?

Some things to consider before eating fish...

Consumption of fish and other sea animals is the sole source of human exposure to methyl mercury per the New England Journal of Medicine (2003). FYI- Mercury has been known to cause health problems for humans, among these are brain damage, tremors, personality change, and memory loss. Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs) are stored in fish flesh. PCBs have been known to cause nervous system disorders and liver damage, and once consumed will remain in your body for years. And thats not all- contaminants such as lead, mercury, and arsenic are also found in the flesh of fish.

Some quick thoughts for the environmentalist...

Our oceans and their resources are being exhausted!
Large fish populations are only ten percent of what they were in the 1950s.
Scientists have discovered that about 1000 whales and dolphins die daily in commercial fishing nets.
Methods such as bottom trawling are destroying biodiversity.
It has been estimated that our oceans will be completely over-fished by the year 2048.
Aprox. 250,000 loggerhead and 60,000 leatherback turtles are entangled by long-lines every year, and it has been predicted that if long-lining practices continue certain species of turtle will be extinct within the next 10 years (http://www.fishinghurts.com/)
